History of Eldoret

Eldoret has a fascinating colonial history that has shaped what it is today. The town was founded in 1910 when South African Boer (Afrikaner) settlers established it as part of the Uasin Gishu plateau settlement scheme. Fifty-eight families arrived in Kenya in August 1908 and officially settled on October 22, 1908.

The area was initially called Sixty-Four or Farm 64 because it was located 64 miles from Londiani along the Uganda Railway. The first post office was established in 1910 at Sisibo, and the name Eldoret was officially adopted in 1912. The name comes from the Maasai word eldore, meaning stony river, referring to the Sosiani River that flows through the area.

Over the decades, Eldoret grew from a small farming settlement into Kenya’s 5th largest city, eventually being granted official city status on August 15, 2024. Today, it serves as the commercial, industrial, and agricultural hub of the North Rift region.
